Our master tailors learnt zardozi the way it was meant to be learnt — beside a window in old Lucknow, under their grandfather's eye, on a wooden frame with the velvet stretched taut. No machine has ever made one of our flowers. That's not nostalgia — that's the only way the gold catches the light right.
